The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica - known as Guanacaste -- is being snapped up by hoteliers and developers. Last summer, both Stephen M. Case, the co-founder of AOL, and the hotel chain Mandarin Oriental announced plans to build properties there. The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo and Hilton Papagayo Resort Costa Rica are open. And in January, Recreo (www.recreocostarica.com), above, a collection of 25 luxury villas on over 70 coastal acres, opened.

Guests are picked up at the airport by a chauffeur and attended to by a personal chef and a maid. Each three- to six-room villa has a private pool , an outdoor deck, a kitchen with teak cabinets and a bathroom with rain showers and soaking tubs. Other amenities include a gym, a spa and tennis courts. Weekly rates start at $2,500 a person with a two-person minimum.
