recreo: City Magazine Costa Utopia
It's pronounced Gwan-a-hah-staah. Remember the name, because you'll soon start hearing it everywhere. A province tucked in northwestern Costa Rica, Guanacaste has already been dubbed the next gold coast of travel, with the hordes of sun-kissed beachcombers, snorkelers, and surfers still outnumbered by the construction workers busy razing and developing the area's scruffy hillsides. Just how well underway is the boom? And is all the fuss and hype worth it? I hopped a plane to fine out.

The New York Times Resorts Springing Up on Costa Rican Shore
The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica - known as Guanacaste -- is being snapped up by hoteliers and developers. Last summer, both Stephen M. Case, the co-founder of AOL, and the hotel chain Mandarin Oriental announced plans to build properties there. The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo and Hilton Papagayo Resort Costa Rica are open. And in January, Recreo (www.recreocostarica.com), above, a collection of 25 luxury villas on over 70 coastal acres, opened.

recreo: MEN.STYLE.COM
Sure, the owners of Costa Rica's new Recreo villas are doing some good (namely, contributing funds to area community-development programs), but frankly we didn't need the extra incentive: Each of its 25 villas includes an alfresco dining salon, a private pool, and even personal chefs and housekeepers—amenities that make the included Wi-Fi, flat-panel TVs, and iPod docks seem almost quaint. Located on the country's Guanacaste Peninsula, the resort is set to open next month on 70 acres of Pacific-front tropical forests. You may want to consider booking soon—the region's next new opening is the Cacique resort from AOL founder Steve Case. Recreo Costa Rica, three-bedroom villas from $6,900, (631) 298-0414, recreocostarica.com
